| According
to a recent article published on May 10th, 2006 by Reuters, “thousands
of children with mental disabilities (in Romania) face the prospect
of a life-time segregated from society in abusive facilities”.
Unfortunately, even after 16 years following the fall
of Communism in Romania, conditions have only somewhat improved
in the area of child protection. “Disabled children
suffer without proper food and care at state-run institutions despite
the country’s vast child protection reforms,”
according to the report by investigators. After visiting numerous
facilities, investigators stated that “the children
were…emaciated. Their spindly arms and legs were twisted into
contorted positions from disuse and atrophy.” Other
investigators spoke of “children confined to cribs
or tied in bed sheets and covered in feces and sores, and of an
‘eerie silence’ in wards where babies had little contact
with caregivers.”
Here at Orasul Sperantei (City of Hope) we are
blessed to have staff and caregivers who have devoted their lives
to bring some relief to these children as well as countless other
children who still live on the streets and in the sewers. We are
blessed, too, to have compassionate and generous donors like you
who support us in our efforts to bring hope and healing to these
lost and often forgotten children. May God bless your giving!
